Opinion Submissions
We debate opinions to find solutions. Without the ability to address specific concerns facing our society, we would be dangerously uninformed, so we need to start a dialogue. In the political arena, debate serves to educate and persuade the general population. In short, a solid working understanding of argument proves necessary when writing opinion pieces for USR.
The opinion portion of this website is dedicated the many debates that define our lives. Please feel free to sign in using Facebook or another method to add your own comments, joining your voice to the heart of our democracy.

Media Mayhem
Napoleon once said, “Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide.” Thank goodness Comedy Central has been making big decisions easier (and therefore less precious) for young Americans trying to decide how to approach this election season. For instance, more adults between the ages of 18-34 watched The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report for this year’s GOP convention coverage than any of

Dog Days for the Dollar
As the troubled American economy continues to stumble toward an uncertain future, some very powerful decision makers are positing that a new influx of cash will solve the problem. Wait, haven’t we heard this before? In the video above, Xtranormal makes a great point about quantitative easing. The Federal Reserve is injecting a mountain of money into the market by buying bonds from the private sector. This is supposed to create more spending power for

Illegal Immigration Still Deserves Attention
Millions of unemployed Americans and millions more at risk of losing their homes after watching their life savings wither away to nothing are rightfully commanding both presidential candidates’ attention as the 2012 election nears. Smoke-and-mirror trickery should be the last subject on any politician’s mind at this point in American history. Nonetheless, voters have a responsibility to remind those vying for political power that some issues not being treated as

The Elderly are Killing the Economy
The “third rail,” used to power trains on a railroad track, is so charged with electricity that it usually kills anyone unlucky enough to touch it. This is why politicians and pundits alike refer to Social Security as the third rail of American politics. If a candidate touches it, he or she is zapped into political oblivion quicker than you can say, “Don’t mess with old people.” Does anyone believe

Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems
The Federal Reserve decided today to use quantitative easing to add $40 billion every month until the U.S. labor market improves. The architects of this dangerous strategy figure the only way to save the American economy involves injecting newly created money into the market. They believe that more quantitative easing will improve the market. It seems like few people truly understand the significance of this last ditch effort. America’s economy is truly on

Does Media Matter?
Media Matters for America is a non-profit organization that monitors conservative media. Specifically, they claim they offer “progressive research and information” and are “dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media” (Smith, “Media”). The organization focuses primarily on domestic issues but incorporates political foreign matters into its reporting as well. This means that any time a conservative media organization misquotes or states something contradictory to

The Golden Rule
We’ve all heard the age-old adage, “He who has the gold makes the rules.” According to the Federal Election Commission, Barack Obama raised $155.4 million more than Mitt Romney for this presidential election (“Campaign,” 2012). The results of the election will illustrate whether this rule still holds true. If Obama wins, we might just chalk it up to the fact that money has become a kind of weather vane in

Military Health Care Is Still Negligent
In 2007, Americans were shocked when the Washington Post ran a series of articles revealing the abhorrent conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Many wondered how our civilian and military leaders could force wounded soldiers to recuperate in one of the most neglected facilities in the country. However, what makes this situation more atrocious is that service members and their families still encounter these situations every day in military

Fox News and a Bloody Mistake
Fox News has a lot to answer for after a high-speed chase in Phoenix, Arizona ended tragically on Friday, September 28th when the suspect drove off the road, fled into the desert and committed suicide, shooting himself to death. KSAZ, a Fox-affiliated TV station in Phoenix, had been covering the episode live from its helicopter, and Fox News inadvertently broadcast the graphic video live across the nation, which has since gone

Of All Places for Big Brother to Find a Home
Not long after World War II broke out in 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which required 120,000 Japanese-Americans to “relocate” to “internment” camps because the government feared any form of Japanese spying and further retaliations against America. In various court cases, defendants claimed violation of their Fifth Amendment rights, but to little avail. The Supreme Court usually favored the U.S. government. Not only have times changed little in
