When I Was But a Puppy: A. E. Zigmund

When I was but a puppy
A grizzled elder said,
“If pretty puppesses you chase
You’ll find you’re better dead;
Enjoy them from a distance,
Keep them a sight to see.”
But I was but a puppy,
No use to talk to me.

When I was still a puppy
That same old dog advised,
“if you ignore my counsel,
Soon up you will be wised;
For if you catch that puppess,
She’ll leave you terribly blue.”
No longer am I a puppy,
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.
