The Road Not Taken: Ziggy Frost Steiner

I stopped at the corner of the street,
And wished I could be two instead
Of one, but followed all four feet
Toward the enticing scent of treat
That though unseen lay just ahead;

Then turned me toward another scent
Around the corner – burning cow,
Enticing, sharp and redolent;
A backyard barbecue I meant
To join, although I knew not how.

That other treat I’d left behind,
A lady beagle in a certain mood,
Insistently beset my mind,
Though likely had I sought to find
Her, she’d have found some other dude.

Oh, I suppose it’s for the best
That for that steak I went whole hog:
A beagle’s after all a pest,
And steak does more than all the rest
To justify God’s ways to Dog.
