Quit by Zigmund A. Guest

When things go sideways, as they always do –
When life’s like a steak that’s too tough to chew,
When you lack the legs to make the jump
And, try as you might, can’t get over the hump,
And everyone calls you to show True Grit –
Do what intelligent dogs do: quit.

If you’re in a hole, first thing: stop digging –
If you’re feeling pukey, first thing, stop pigging,
If you’re hurrying toward the edge of a cliff,
Better to freeze than to wake up a stiff;
If a challenge arises for which you’re unfit –
Do what the wisest dogs do: just quit.

When everyone’s urging you, “Go faster!”
Leave that to your beloved Master –
Let Him, if he wants, be the one to Achieve –
You be the one to go home on leave –
The very first lesson you learned was, “Sit!”
Still good advice; learn when to quit.
