Cyclical

I keep wondering how I can speak the word God
without sounding out the lies on my lips.
I’ve dipped into religion but felt
more cold and alone.

Without sounding out the lies on my lips,
I kissed her as though Christianity could become my tongue.
More cold and alone,
I miss when we were just friends, and God didn’t come between our hugs.

I kissed her as though Christianity could become my tongue,
but now I know forgiveness is a word my hands won’t hold in prayer.
I miss when we were just friends, and God didn’t come between our hugs.
I had thought the bible was about love.

But now I know forgiveness is a word my hands won’t hold in prayer.
And she is a prayer in motion.
I had thought the bible was about love
rather than a book whose pages argue like its people.

She is a prayer in motion, and
I’ve dipped into religion but felt
only a book whose pages argue like people
wondering, “How can I speak the word ‘God’?”
