Walking up Western Avenue, Dmitri see this:
In front of apartment, beneath young elm green,
girl in white dress whirling and whirling,
someone, her father surely, taking picture.
Under shade of elm and building,
she appear like flower upside down,
gown whiter than lily, head black.
Behind her, green window sashes.
She whirl and whirl, dad shoot, shoot.
Limousine pull up to deposit boyfriend
To take daughter away. They go.
I watch dad die on way up walk to house.
He know well what life hold ready to give her,
roll of nickel in glovèd hand boyfriend hold
out to lead her into limousine. And envy
her not to know. And go back into house.
