Backyard Target Shooting

I’m always scared when I first point down range, thoughts racing, imagining every grisly scenario, “What if it misfires and blows off my hand?” Or my face. Deep breath in, index on trigger, deep breath out, and BOOM! Momentary surprise when sound echoes through the protective earmuffs, sudden images of backyard boys with toy rifles and coonskin caps defending the Alamo with Shep the dog, retreating from siege to shade until afternoon snacks

Edward Lear — Not Just Nonsense

My heart is elsewhere. I am consumed by the memory of a rose. Take a rose petal in your hand. Stroke it. Lift

Pleasures of the Nose

A garden full of sweet odours is a garden full of charm, a most precious kind of charm not to be implanted by mere skill in horticulture or power of purse, and which is beyond explaining. It is born of sensitive and very personal preferences yet its appeal is almost universal. Fragrance speaks to many to whom color and form say little, and it “can bring as irresistibly as music

Better Stories

Sometimes, life happens, whether we want it to or not. Filled with optimism, we make grand plans and promises, setting out to take on the world in our own inimitable way. Soon, however, reality sets upon us, barging in with a vengeance, and we end up missing the mark. The reasons vary. We oversleep, forget, get waylaid, change our minds, or just generally go off the rails. Bottom line, we
