The Academic Redneck Fitness Challenge: Update 8

Previous Weight Loss (November 28, 2016-February 5, 2018): 27.6 pounds
Weight Loss (February 5-March 5, 2018): 6.8 pounds
Total Weight Loss (November 28, 2016-March 5, 2018): 34.4 pounds

Yay me! I’ve battled back to the weight loss I had accomplished last October. I’m proud that I didn’t give up even when I had several months of setbacks and weight gain. My situation is a cautionary tale showing just how difficult losing weight can be.  It took me four months to shed the nearly nine pounds I gained. Sadly, if I don’t watch it, I can gain nine pounds in a mere week.

In late February, I had–as we southerners might say–a “Come to Diet and Fitness Jesus” meeting and staged an intervention with myself–and just in time, too. Things were looking pretty grim around Valentine’s Day, when Mike threw down with a fancy dinner and magnificent dessert for yours truly. The best part of that evening was the delicious Hummingbird Cake (featured on the cover of the February issue of Southern Living). Lest you be alarmed, dear readers, no hummingbirds were harmed in the making of that splendid dessert. After all, as Atticus Finch once said, “It’s a sin to kill a hummingbird, even for a kick-ass cake.” Or something like that. However, even if hummingbird were actually an ingredient, that wouldn’t have stopped me from scarfing all that luscious cake and cream cheese frosting goodness.

So anyway, desperate to get back on track, I got help. On February 17, I joined Weight Watchers online. The new Weight Watchers Freestyle program is really great! I lost more weight in the last two weeks of February than I have in a single month since November of 2016.  The new plan now has an expanded list of zero-point foods like eggs and grilled chicken, so it’s easier to fill up on high-volume, bang-for-your-buck foods. I’ve had some significant successes on Weight Watchers in the past, but I think this new program is the best yet. The thing about Weight Watchers that helps me is the Points system. If I stay aware of what I’m eating and how much, I am less likely to overdo it. It’s the one plan that helps me keep control of my portion sizes.

Still, March eating will be fraught with peril. Next week, I leave for Hawaii and a nine-day trip to islands in the Pacific.  It’s going to be hard to maintain momentum when the Mai Tai’s start flowing and the luau food tempts me. I hope I can stay on track.

I’m still exercising every single day. I do a lot of walking and aerobic activity, but I need to do more stretching and strength training. I’m making slow and steady progress and will fight on!

Next update: April 2.
