Happy Labor Day! Well, I didn’t reach my goal to lose another four pounds during August, but I still made slow, steady progress with a 2.4-pound weight loss. In my defense, though, I weighed four days earlier this month because I’m out of town for the Labor Day weekend. I might have been able to get to three pounds down by today had I been at home to weigh this morning. But then again, desserts happen on the road, especially when the travel involves visiting Mom at the nursing home.

Her health continues to decline, so I bought her some treats to enjoy. Unfortunately, I consumed some as well, perhaps to soothe my own grief that she’s having greater difficulty recognizing who I am. These visits are getting harder and harder.

The bad news: Right now, I’m feeling a little queasy after eating a doughnut.  The good news: Right now, I’m feeling a little queasy after eating a doughnut. Since I’ve actually been taking care of myself since last November, I have a lower tolerance for junk food. At one time, I could polish off three doughnuts without even feeling full. Now, one is more than enough.

I continue to note improvement in my strength and stamina. I was pleased when I could easily lift my 50-pound suitcase off the baggage claim carousel with only one arm. (Yes, I use the entire baggage allowance every time. I travel with exactly 50 pounds, whether I’m going for two weeks or two months.) In addition, today marks 155 straight days of exercise.

I have four more weigh-ins for the year. I need to average 4.4 pounds per month to make my 50- pound goal. The rest of September will be a fitness boot camp for me. Stay tuned.

Next report: October 2.
